THE BRIEF
As part of a school initiative, we entered the Nikon Film Festival, a well-known short film competition in which participants submit original 2.5-minute films based on a shared theme — this year: “Fire.”
Our team began production under tight time constraints and with a concept that, in retrospect, didn’t align with our strengths or creative instincts. The original idea followed a solitary character in search of joy, symbolized through a shift from black-and-white to warm color grading. While the concept aimed to tie emotional warmth to the theme of fire, the execution ultimately fell flat.
After viewing the completed edit, we quickly realized the result lacked clarity, energy, and narrative impact. With only a few hours left before the submission deadline, we made the decision to completely reframe the film, using the existing footage in a self-aware, satirical way.
The final piece became an honest, humorous take on what happens when procrastination gets in the way, projects are rushed, and expectations go unmet. This last-minute pivot transformed the project from a missed opportunity into a light hearted, unconventional response to the brief.
